Pull-Ups

Pull-ups are a special kind of pain. We did them all the time and through all phases of basic SEAL training. To make things worse, they are always done at the end of the PT session when you are physically drained, not to mention your boots now weigh about five pounds each because they are waterlogged. You are covered with sand and salt water is in your eyes and now you have to start the pull-up session. Total recipe for failure for me anyway. I really dreaded pull-up time.

During the pull-up sessions, you rotate between four or five guys doing sets of 10, and that gives you about a two-minute rest between. Each one of the instructor staff who rotated through the pull-up portion somehow was always really good at them. They would start fast and when you got to six of 10, the instructor started slowing down, having you hold your chin over the bar for what seemed like an eternity, then just hanging on the bar, which seemed even longer than eternity (if there is such a thing) until you hear “dismount.” The good news is since you spend most of the physical conditioning session running to and from the surf, the sand and salt make your hands pretty sticky, and coupled with the calluses on your palms, you really don’t have to grip too hard. Your hands kind of just stick to the bar, which was a relief for me. It’s the little victories you savor.
